Celebrating its 10th year of Golus
Parle Products, India’s largest biscuits and Confectioneries Company, has been active across regions conducting various social activities as a part of its responsibility towards society.

What started in the year 2005 as a small initiative by Parle to revive fading custom of making Golus in Tamil nadu and thereby preserve the heritage and culture has grown into a big movement. The journey that Parle started was an initiative towards supporting the age old tradition of Golu.

In Tamil Nadu, traditionally, women decorate various dolls (kolus) made of clay during Navaratri celebrations by setting up 7-9 steps. This display is well decorated and friends and relatives are invited to witness this custom. It was found that due to time pressures and lack of interest in younger generations, this tradition is slowly dying and is getting restricted to a select few households.

Thus, to revive the fading tradition, Parle introduced this novel promotion called Parle Golu Galata contest. The festival of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi started as a house visit project. The journey began with house visits, appreciating people who keep Golu in their houses by visiting them and selecting the best Golus, which were given prizes in a grand function. During Navaratri, From year 2008 to 2010, Parle sent more than 60 teams of judges to visit more than 15000 homes across ten cities of Tamil Nadu.

The year 2011 was yet another achievement. A community Golu was organized, and people were invited to display their Golu making skills and golus. The event earned a place in the Guinness World Record for "The Largest Golu" consisting of about 70000 Golus.

While the competitive spirit and urge to do something good made entire families work together to win the prize, the outcome renewed the interest of youngsters in the tradition. To encourage kids to get involved in this tradition and to generate their interest in it, last year Parle started their initiative in schools. It went to 600 schools across 10 cities and contacted 10 lakh students, supplying them with craft material and asking them to make Golus. The best Golus across cities were awarded prizes.
